Step-by-step installation
- Download the installer: Go to the official Notepad++ download page and choose the Windows installer (usually the 64-bit version if your Windows is 64-bit).
- Run the installer: Double-click the downloaded .exe file. If Windows asks for permission, choose Yes.
- Choose installation options: Follow the prompts. You can typically keep the default options unless you have a specific preference.
- Finish installation: Click Finish when the installer completes.
- Launch Notepad++: Open it from the Start Menu or desktop shortcut.
Recommended settings after installation
- Check for updates: In Notepad++, use the built-in update option if available, or reinstall a newer version later.
- Install useful plugins (optional): If you need extra features, you can install plugins from within Notepad++ (for example, for Git integration, spell checking, or enhanced tooling).
- Set language and encoding: Use the Language and Encoding menus to ensure files display correctly.
Troubleshooting
If the installer wonβt run
Make sure you downloaded the file from the official source and that your Windows security settings are not blocking it. Try downloading again and running the installer as an administrator.
If you installed the wrong version (32-bit vs 64-bit)
You can uninstall Notepad++ from Settings > Apps and then install the correct version. Most users should choose the 64-bit installer on modern Windows.
Quick checklist
- Download from the official Notepad++ site.
